January 2025 Kernel Newsletter

Before diving into the latest updates from Kernel and our exciting plans for the new year, I would like to first acknowledge that 2025 started off in an unimaginable way. While Kernel is based in Los Angeles, our team was largely spared from the destruction caused by the fires. Many people we know lost their homes and all of their belongings. As the fires die down and the focus shifts toward the future, our support and thoughts remain with our LA community.

MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT

After a round of successful presentations covering our work in mild cognitive impairment (MCI), we recently finished a manuscript that was submitted for peer review. We’re excited to share this early work with the scientific community and to receive feedback from reviewers and researchers alike. If you’d like to read through the preprint of our manuscript, you can find it live on medRxiv: A functional neuroimaging biomarker of mild cognitive impairment using TD-fNIRS.

Going into 2025, we’re excited to expand this work into more comprehensive cognitive tests using Kernel Flow. We are starting this by recruiting a large cohort of healthy volunteers to build the first normative database of cognition using Kernel Flow. If you are based in Los Angeles and want to participate (and get $100 + your own cognitive report), you can sign up here.

DEPRESSION

We have continued to make progress in our depression prediction study. We shared interim results from our PREDICT-TMS study at both CNS Summit and ACNP last fall. We’re excited by the progress and look forward to completing enrollment in our TMS and SPRAVATO groups later this year. Patients interested in participating in this research study may enroll through any of our trial sites listed here.

Looking Ahead

Kernel had a strong 2024, driven by scientific successes, positive clinical readouts, and an increase in sales of our hardware systems to researchers. We are excited to build on these successes in 2025 and have a few big announcements coming soon - including more scientific publications, results from our clinical studies, and new products!

There is a growing interest in and sharper focus on brain health. Whether developments are for prevention, diagnosis, or disease management, Kernel will play a key part.
